Warehouse Operations Review & Warehouse
Layout Review.
Conducted by Supply
Chain Logistics Consulting Ltd for SPTG.
Steve Porter Transport Group (SPTG) contacted SCLC Ltd. in August 2011 following the
purchase of another haulage and distribution
business on the Isle of Wight which
effectively doubled the size of its
operation overnight. The initial thinking
had been to keep full trailer operations at
the newly acquired site and concentrate all
groupage activity at the company’s
headquarters in Cowes. In principal, this
was a good move, but it soon became apparent
that the sheer volume of freight, fork-lift
and vehicle activity was overloading both
the system of work and the limitations of a
100 year old building.
We were both impressed and surprised by the
swift response to our enquiry to SCLC Ltd.,
and the initial conversations gave us
sufficient confidence to book them for a
two-day visit and review. Graham Burgess is
a knowledgeable and personable individual
who obviously has broad experience in our
industry. His perceptive questioning of
management, drivers and warehouse staff
enabled him to gather information that would
have been very difficult for SPTG Directors
to accurately capture. The review was
carried out without disruption to day-to-day
operations and accurately followed the
proposal initially submitted to SPTG.
The final Review Document was a concise,
comprehensible and workable document which
is the foundation for ongoing changes to
both our work practices and use of our
building and yard. The review meeting held
with Directors was similarly concise and
informative offering practical solutions
across a range of cost considerations.
In conclusion, we found the whole exercise
to be of benefit to our business and, most
importantly, at a price that is affordable.
Indeed, we hope that by even putting in a
few changes, the review will literally pay
for itself at a stroke. We would have no
hesitation in bringing SCLC Ltd. back to
review our other sites and areas of
operation and equally, would have no
hesitation in recommending their services to
others.

Borg Warner Turbo & Emissions Systems

Assignment :- Warehouse Layout Design
Assignment
BorgWarner are a large international company
manufacturing components for the Automotive
Industry. The Bradford Facility manufactures
Turbochargers for Commercial Diesel
Applications and we have recently taken out
a lease on a new 95,000 Sq ft warehouse
adjacent to the existing plant. To ensure we
optimise the space available we decided that
expert help would be beneficial to the
project. Having spoken to several potential
consultants we decided to use SCLC based on
their quick response, competitive offer and
knowledge of our industry that Graham has
gained over many years in logistics.
The brief was to layout the warehouse space
to optimise the flow of material in and out
of the building, create 2D and 3D models and
present the findings to our management team.
We were impressed with the detailed research
that Graham went into to understand our
business, current warehouse operation and
our future requirements. Within a week we
had a basic 2D layout of the warehouse and
racking system. Over the following 2 or 3
weeks we refined the layout and were able to
present the final solution to our management
team within a month of giving Graham the
green light to start. The 3D 'walk through'
model that Graham created has been a great
tool to 'sell' the layout internally and it
also highlights areas for improvement which
are not always clear in 2D layouts.
SCLC have a professional approach, very
responsive to customer changes and meet
agreed deadlines. Their business-like manner
and straight forward talking enables the job
to be done in a quick, efficient and
enjoyable way. We already asked SCLC to do
another small project for us and would
certainly consider using them again in the
future.

Assignment -
Warehouse Process Improvement and Warehouse
Layout Design.
I approached Supply Chain Logistics a couple
of months ago to enquire about consultancy
help to determine a) how we could improve
our current warehouse systems and
operations, and b) what would be the ideal
layout for the future/
Graham Burgess responded quicker than other
consultants and after a briefing by
telephone, came up with a thorough proposal
that offered more than we were looking for.
We agreed the project to cover 6 days work
within the next three weeks. Graham spent
two days on site, three days evaluation and
preparation and a final day presenting the
results.
We are really pleased with the final outcome
in that we have an independent evaluation of
all of our current processes from order
entry through to despatch and invoicing of
the goods. Graham gives praise where things
are correct but clearly points out the many
improvements that can be made. We are now
setting up an internal project team to make
some easy immediate improvements and cost
and evaluate some of the more difficult
changes.
We are a complex but profitable SME with a
turnover of £6 million but over 2,000
products - some made in house and some
bought in finished goods.
I would certainly use Graham again and
recommend him to any other SME

Supply Chain Operations Review and KSA Warehouse
Design
Our company, whose retail
operations span the GCC
(GCC
groups Saudi
Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and the
United Arab Emirates)
and whose head quarters
are based in Dubai, engaged Supply Chain
Logistics Consulting to work with us on a
Business Improvement Project focussing on our
Distribution and Logistics. It also included the
design and layout of a new Regional Warehouse
Facility in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The lead consultant on the
Project was Graham Burgess from Supply Chain
Logistics. Graham was referred to us based on a
similar project he had been involved in at
another regional retailer operating in the GCC.
With in a short span of time after our initial
contact Graham made the trip to our head
quarters and did an initial review of our
operations followed immediately by a submission
of his proposal for a scope of works going
forward.
Whilst we knew we had a
problem in our supply chain processes in view of
the growth we were experiencing, Graham was able
to succinctly put this into context and plot a
way forward.
We promptly engaged Supply
Chain Logistics to lead our Business Improvement
Project in this area of the business. We found
Graham to adopt a very hands on, no nonsense
approach. His review was done with great detail,
accuracy and speed. In addition he provided
training and guidance for our team to continue
with the project.
The design of the new
regional warehouse in Saudi was also expertly
handled and in great detail and the support
design software enhanced the process.
All in all a very pleasing
project which has provided us the direction and
approach necessary for us to achieve significant
improvements in our business as well as a great
return on investment. We anticipate using Supply
Chain Logistics for future projects of this
nature.

About Herbert Brown & Sons
– Jewellers and Pawnbrokers
The family business began with John Brown who was a
linen presser and outfitter in Hull in 1829. He
subsequently moved to Leeds where his son, Charles
Hood Brown originally followed in his father's
trade, but then became a pawnbroker and jeweller -
and so the empire began! In 1840 Charles opened his
first 3 branches in Leeds and was then later
succeeded by his son Herbert Brown in 1863, who went
on to expand the company until 26 branches were in
existence.
Herbert Colin Brown steadily grew the company and
four of his five sons went on to join the business
and continued to expand the empire.
Herbert Brown is now part of Albemarle and Bond
Holdings plc and forms one of the largest
Pawnbroking and Retail Jewellery chains in the UK.
The board still includes one of Herbert Colin
Brown’s sons and the family values that have served
the brand so well over the past are still very much
a part of their culture today.
The
Assignment
Supply Chain Logistics
Consulting Ltd was asked to conduct a review of all
of our logistical processes including head office
and those of its branch stores, the aim being to
modernise and improve the logistical flows, reduce
inventory levels and improve service levels to
branch stores and customers.
The business process areas
that were reviewed are goods inwards, goods
outwards, warehouse, purchasing and stock
replenishments, store service levels from
head-office, use of IT systems. workshop work flows,
inventory management and controls.
Supply Chain Logistics
Consulting Ltd was professional in the way that they
carried out the review and in a short space of time
understood our business processes and what
improvements were needed. The review was very
detailed and the recommended changes to our
processes were impressive, so much so that we have
been busy implementing many of these over the last
few months.
We continue to work with SCLC
Ltd to improve our business processes as we grow our
business. We have found them to be reliable,
realistic, experienced and hands on people who can
deliver business process improvement quickly,
effectively and efficiently.

BBI Healthcare.
Cedar Health was based in Hazel
Grove. The company is engaged in sales and
distribution and supplies consumer health products
through pharmacies, health stores and other High
Street retail outlets. BBI healthcare is a company
specialising in diabetes care products distributed

Following a series of acquisitions the decision was
made to merge these two businesses and relocate to a
central facility.
The Assignment
A number of sites of around 40,000 sq
ft were investigated but eventually Pencoed in
South Wales was selected due to its proximity to the
parent company in Cardiff and attractive warehouse
rates.
SCLC Ltd were brought in to help
assess the suitability of 3 potential sites
(Manchester, Sandy and Pencoed) to bring together
three separate warehouse facilities.
SCLC Ltd responded within days to our
initial enquiry and are always available on the end
of the phone. You always deal with the same person
who understands your brief and your business
Within days of a site visit they were
able to produce detailed layouts and racking plans
and discuss workflows and other relevant issues.
Changes or different options can be examined quickly
using the design tool and the impact on pallet
spaces and configurations is instantly available.
In addition their 3D modelling tool gives a real
sense of how the space works –especially useful in
assessing awkward or unusual shaped spaces. This
tool was also used to brief the senior management
team who are not always able to visit the site.
SCLC Ltd were then also commissioned to liaise with
racking suppliers to provide quotes according to
agreed layouts. SCLC Ltd also consider and advise on
the full picture including methods of work,
efficiencies, safe ways of working etc.
SCLC Ltd’s
approach is always professional but straight talking
and no nonsense.
The best judge of any design is what
you would go back and change after implementation. I
am happy to say that after two months of operations
in the new site we would not change a thing. SCLC
Ltd’s attention to detail even extended to checking
up on the start of racking installation and signing
off on the final job. What’s more they helped
negotiate best prices for this work across two
suppliers.
This is not the first time we have
used SCLC Ltd and we would have no hesitation in
calling on them again.

Dear
Graham.
May I
take this opportunity to thank you & your company for
the excellent service & commitment that was shown during
our latest internal improvement programme.
The way
that you conducted yourself whilst inside our building
was of the highest standards, you made our personnel
feel at ease with clear visible & easy to follow
instructions. The process change was very professionally
conducted & with clear guidelines that helped everyone,
and the implementation was a very smooth transition.
The
main reasons for this success I believe was the way both
companies worked together with high levels of
communication, mutual trust & a belief that it could be
possible on both sides. The process improvement ideas
now save our company money, less manpower hours &
increased our quality to our Customers. I will have no
hesitation in working with your company again with you

The Annual NW Supply
Chain Lecture was recently held at the NWDA and the
input of Graham Burgess, MD Supply Chain Logistics
Consulting Ltd was a perfect fit with which to round
off the event.
The event itself
covered Threats & Opportunities facing the NW
Aerospace Supply Chain, and Graham highlighted the
clear opportunities which exist at the operational
level to take out waste and help the UK supply chain
more successfully compete with overseas low cost
competition. This was applicable not only in
Aerospace, but in all manufacturing sectors.
Grahams valued
contribution displayed not only the agility of his own
organisation to successfully cover many aspects of a
companies operation, but also detailed how a new pair
of eyes can quite simply take cost out and add value
to the "bottom line". The experience of Graham & his
organisation was evident throughout, as a number of
live examples were discussed.
My only concern after
the event was that I hoped I had not left it too late

TDG - Transport Development Group
Plc.
During 2004 TDG Plc
embarked on a group wide project to implement a CRM
system. To assist with this initiative TDG employed
Supply Chain Logistics Consulting to provide an
independent review of the business processes involved
in the customer engagement process.
Throughout May-July over
50 people were interviewed across the group. SCLC was
responsible for interviewing, collation and
presentation of results to arrive at a standardised
set of business processes.
Whilst working on the
project SCLC became an active and valuable member of
the project team. SCLC’s knowledge and skills provided
TDG with the resources to overcome an already
challenging project.
TDG found SCLC’s
- Approach to the project - methodical and
systematic
- Communication style - open and interactive
- Review methodology - thorough and in-depth
- Management feedback sessions – valuable in
understanding key areas for concentration
TDG would have no hesitation in employing the
services of SCLC in the future.
